What DGCA “Level 1” firmware security means for drone OEMs

Why flight-controller firmware must be protected against tampering, what Level 1 compliance asks of manufacturers, and how to plan for it.

Drone manufacturers in India must show that the software flying their aircraft can’t be altered by unauthorised people. The DGCA’s RPAS Guidance Manual describes this as part of “Level 1” compliance for the flight module.

Why it matters

Modified firmware can switch off geofencing, raise altitude limits or disable failsafes. Beyond safety, it undermines type certification: an aircraft running altered software is no longer the aircraft that was certified.

What manufacturers need

  • Authenticated firmware: the flight controller only runs firmware signed by the manufacturer.
  • Protected keys: signing keys are kept off production machines and away from customers.
  • Controlled updates: updates are distributed through a trusted channel and verified before installation.
  • Evidence: documentation showing how the protection works, for certification audits.

Planning for it

Firmware security is easiest to add before a model enters production. Review your flight-controller hardware for secure-boot support, decide who will hold signing keys, and build signing into your release process.

We provide flight-module security implementation for OEMs, integrated with GoDrona GCS so that pilots and service teams update aircraft safely. Talk to us about your models.
